Carl Nyrén (1917–2011) was a product of the Nordic cultural tradition, and especially of the egalitarian Swedish welfare society of solidarity and compassion, the People’s Home. At the same time that his architecture echoes international architectural currents, it reflects the long history of Swedish architecture extending from early archaic constructions to timeless and anonymous vernacular buildings, and from the spirited lightness of Gustavian and Nordic tradition to the soft Swedish version of functionalism, ”The Swedish Grace”.
